Today Mirielle and I went to Pinehurst, NC to celebrate Katherine's birthday! (My cousin Ryan and Tracy's daughter.) Tracy did a fabulous job as you'll see in the slideshow- the theme was Hula! It was truly a wonderful day!

Lost in Wonder, Love and Praise!

May 30, 2009

"Oh! divine Redeemer, out of whose inexhaustible fullness I would daily draw a rich supply of grace into my needy soul, be pleased to impart unto me an undivided heart; that to please You, may be my greatest happiness, and to promote Your glory my highest honor. Preserve me from false motives, from a double mind, and a divided heart. Keep me entirely to Yourself, and enable me to crucify every lust, which would tempt my heart from You. Enable me by Your grace to walk in one uniform path of holy, childlike obedience. When tempted to turn aside to the right hand or to the left, may I keep steadily Your way, until brought before Your throne, I see Your face, behold Your smile, and fall in ecstasy at Your feet, lost in wonder, love, and praise."

(Thomas Reade, "On the Blessedness of a New Heart")

Bird Watching

Bird Watching Gets 2 Thumbs up!

May 29, 2009

Miri and I recently purchased what Bill calls a "bird diner". We are having so much fun! So far we've identified 13 backyard birds. We have our favorites and our not so favorites. Our favorites are the House Finches because they come to the feeder together every time- "Husband and Wife" as Miri says. The Cardinals are precious because the husband feeds the wife! The Red-Winged Blackbird is beautiful but a bully. Every time he comes to our yard he swoops down with a rather dramatic show of strength- scaring everyone away expect maybe the crows who seem oblivious.
Any suggestions on how to make our bird watching even more fun? Feel free to post here or email me!

Ryan on one of his tours of duty~

May 25, 2009

Today we are remembering those who have and are heroically serving our country. I invite you to please pray for my cousin Ryan and his family today! Ryan is serving on his 3rd tour of duty and is now serving in a Special Forces Unit. I know he covets your prayers. Thank you!

Come Messy

May 23, 2009

“Jesus does not say, ‘Come to me, all you who have learned how to concentrate in prayer, whose minds no longer wander, and I will give you rest.’ No, Jesus opens his arms to his needy children and says, ‘Come to me, all who are weary and heaven-laden, and I will give you rest.’

The criteria or coming to Jesus is messiness. Come overwhelmed with life. Come with your wandering mind. Come messy.”

—Paul Miller, A Praying Life (Colorado Springs, CO: NavPress 2009), 31-32

A few more quotes...

May 21, 2009

It's been a busy week- hence my blog negligence :). Here are a few more quotes from the book!

Jonathan (age 6) While watching his first live soccer game, he was a bit frightened by the screaming fans. My mom explained to Jonathan that the people were just screaming because it was an exciting game! A few days later, Jon was outside playing basketball by himself and he was SCREAMING at the top of his lungs! I quickly ran outside to see what was wrong. Jon said- "Nothing is wrong Mom. It's just an exciting game!" :)

Taylor (age 4) Taylor, waiting for me to get him out the shopping cart while I was putting the groceries in the car, started to panic because he thought I was going to leave him. I said... "Honey I would NEVER leave you and do you know why?" Taylor responded "Because I'm soooooooo wonderful??" Yep!

Mirielle (age 5) Taylor asked Miri if she got disciplined today. Miri said "Of course not, we didn't have school today!" Yikes!

Taylor (age 9) He sat down on the couch and the space heater had been facing the couch- so it was quite warm. Taylor cheerfully said "Wow! This really warms up my leg pits!" :)

Jon (age 6) Walked into the kitchen and joyfully announced... "This is SUCH an exciting house! I'm learning to tie my shoes and Taylor is learning how to go on the potty!" Yep- it was exciting!

Miri (age 9) We were teaching Miri about appropriate dress. A commercial came on while we were watching TV one day and I changed the channel because the girl's dress was inappropriate. Miri said "Well, at least her earrings were appropriate!" :)

An Unfailing Refuge

May 15, 2009

A wonderful prayer from the writings of JR MacDuff

"May the consciousness of Your presence and favor -- lessen my every cross and sweeten my every care. I anew commend myself to Your gracious keeping and guidance this day. Watch over me for good; and may every power of my body and every faculty of my mind, combine in devotion to Your service and glory. Wean me from all that is fleeting and perishable. Let it be my highest joy to follow You -- and my deepest pain to grieve You.

Other refuges will fail, other props will be removed; may I find in You, an unfailing refuge and portion and friend! I go forth to the duties of a new morning, in simple dependence on Your grace and strength."

What a weekend!

May 13, 2009

We had a wonderful weekend celebrating Jonathan's college graduation and Mother's Day! We are so proud of Jonathan and so enjoying having Julie and Nana and Da here. God is so good!

Discoveries

May 9, 2009

Some of my favorite entries in the book capture exciting discoveries made by the boys:

Jonathan (age 6) "Mom! Did you know that words have letters in them? It's the alphabet all mixed up!"

Taylor (age 5) "Mom! Did you know that girls are HUMAN??" Could it be??

Learning the language

May 7, 2009

Some of my favorite entries from our book have to do with our kids learning the English language. These are just a few...

Jonathan (age 4) He couldn't remember something and said "Mom! I loose my thinks!"

Jon and Taylor with a neighbor friend~

Taylor (age 3) He was putting on his shoes and asked "Am I a good puter-shoer on?" Yes son :).

Miri and Taylor ~

Mirielle (age 6) Said we were driving as 'slow as a banana peel!" :)

Some of our favorite quotes~

May 5, 2009

Over the past few days I've been enjoying re-reading our book of memorable things our kids have said and done. I will eventually return to 'regular programming' but for now I'd like to continue posting out of ... the book :).

This entry is one of our favorite 'Jon quotes'. I apologize if it's a bit crude :).

Jon- (age 5) Wanting to make sure he followed rules of etiquette- asked "If I need to put my hand over my mouth when I burp... do I need to put my hand over my bottom when I toot?" :)

Taylor-(age 3) hearing the above- asked "So then do I need to cover MY mouth when I toot? We still laugh!

Miri (age 3) Having water in her ear from being in the pool- told Mom "MOM!!! My ear is drunk!!"

Jonathan and Taylor ~ early 90's

From the book...

Jonathan- (age 6) He announced one day that he figured out how God made Adam and Eve. He said he was sure that God used dust to make Adam and then God used Adam's robe to make Eve. :)

Taylor- (age 3) Trying to think of another excuse to not eat his vegetables- Taylor declared with passion "If I eat it, I'll turn into poison!"

Miri- (age 5) Miri was pretending she was Ma Ingalls (Little House) and she needed to talk to Pa who was busy in the fields. She yelled for him but apparently he didn't answer so she picked up her play cell phone to reach him :).

Taylor- age 2. He always needed a hard hat!

In my previous post, I mentioned how we've captured some of the memorable things our kids said and did. Here's another excerpt...

Taylor- (age 3) One evening before dinner, Taylor asked if we could pray with him. After he began praying over the food for about 10 seconds he stopped to give instruction. He said "Praying with me means you say "Yes Lord" when I say good words!" :)

The book~

May 2, 2009

One of the cherished bits of counsel we received when the boys were little was to purchase a little book and write down memorable things they say or do. We started when Jonathan was about 3. Every now and then we pull the book out to everyone's delight! A few examples...

Jon- (age 7) He noticed that the suggested ages to play a certain board game were '2 and up'. He asked- "Does that mean no one older than up can play it?" :)

Taylor-(age 5) He asked me- "Does God have blood in his veins?" I asked him what he thought. His reply- "I think he does because there was blood on the cross."

Miri- (age 9) I told Miri about the Wright brothers who invented the airplane. Miri asked- "Who were the Left brothers?" :)

Do you have a book?
